It is widely known that online mail-order company Amazon has been experimenting with the potential of drones for some time now. This week, the United States Patent and Trademark Office granted the company a patent for drones that are planned to be able to meet driving electric vehicles on the road in order to charge them while in motion.
It is speculated that the invention may be a solution to the still poorly developed charging stations infrastructure for electric vehicles around the world. Amazon may forestall the efforts of cities worldwide to meet the goals of the energy transition and renovation of the transportation sector by bringing the missing part directly to the users of electric vehicles. Founder Jeff Bezos commented on the character of some of Amazon’s promising innovations as follows: “They’re the reason we’re successful: Put the customer first. Invent. And be patient.”
But there are still several questions to be answered before the technology will enter the market. It is not yet clear how a driver will be able to order a charging drone while driving or whether the service will only be available to Amazon costumers.
