GILDEMEISTER energy storage has just successfully installed four units of their proven, turn-key vanadium redox flow energy storage systems on Kitobo Island (Uganda) as the heart of a stand-alone micro-grid powered by photovoltaic energy. This is the first time that the 2,000 residents of the remote island in the Victoria lake have stable access to electrical power.
With some of the best vanadium resources in the world, South Africa is a natural base for vanadium-based industries. At the same time, Africa has the world’s highest need for off-grid solutions and the continent’s radial transmission grids require energy storage (ESS) with capabilities ideally suited to vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) technology.
South Africa’s energy landscape is shaped by several policy documents each with specific focal areas including emissions, localization, job creation, and energy supply; all developed by different government departments.
Following on the virtual collapse of the round one renewables projects in Egypt the focus inevitably turns to the source of the problems and how they can be avoided in other countries where renewables projects are seen as being fundamental to economic growth and where IFI’s are encouraging investment.
