Miltec UV is a privately held corporation located on the eastern side of the scenic Chesapeake Bay in Stevensville, Maryland. Miltec UV has been servicing the UV industry for 28 years and sustaining its global leadership in manufacturing for both arc and microwave ultraviolet (UV) curing systems. They offer standard UV equipment and custom designed systems to interface with existing or new manufacturing production lines. Miltec UV curing systems can be found worldwide in a wide range of markets. Some of these markets include optical fiber, wood and vinyl flooring, printing, automotive, metal decorating, semiconductor, and battery. UV Curing is a process used in many industries to improve manufacturing reliability, minimize or eliminate solvents, reduce costs, and achieve dramatic production increases.
In 2011, Miltec UV was selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to explore the potentially significant improvements in cost and environmental performance of UV technology as applied to lithium-ion battery manufacturing. Miltec UV cost shared the development work with the DOE and in cooperation with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Argonne National Laboratory. As a result of the focused research and development effort, Miltec UV has now launched their new, revolutionary Lithium-ion Battery UV Technology. This new high-speed coating and curing technology allows battery manufacturers to produce lithium-ion batteries at a much faster pace, with much less floor space and carbon footprint, and without the use of toxic solvents and drying ovens therefore providing significant cost savings. Furthermore, it reduces the cost of improving the safety performance of lithium-ion batteries in all LIB applications including HEV, PHEV, and EV as well as consumer electronics and grid energy storage.
Miltec UV has introduced two UV curing systems for the lithium-ion battery industry. The first is a new high-speed coating and curing technology using Miltec’s new CX400. The CX400 is a compact, high speed coating and UV curing system specifically designed for precision coating of ceramic coatings on polyolefin separators or lithium-ion battery anodes. It can do precision coating from 1-10 µm thickness using a water based proven UV curable binder and can coat separator films or anodes with a wide range of ceramic particles.
The second revolutionary technology introduced by Miltec UV is the use of UV curing to manufacture lithium-ion battery electrodes. In seconds, UV light can polymerize a low viscosity photoreactive mixture into a cross-linked polymer. In this process, a liquid instantly becomes a solid coating. UV curing allows rapid production beyond what is achievable by other means. For example: commercial processes like fiber optic coatings are commonly produced at line speeds of 2,000 m/min. The coating fully cures and is ready to use or test immediately after light exposure. UV binders which do not require NMP have been developed for cathode coatings and specific Lithium Titanate anode coatings. Excellent electrochemical performance has been demonstrated for cathode coatings with coatings in the following composition range: 90:5:5, 90:7:3, 98.5:0.5:1, 95/3/2 (NMC:Conductive Additive binder), and anode coatings at 94:3:3 (LTO:carbon:UV binder).
The launch of this NEW Lithium-ion Battery Technology has been expanding to the US and international markets and will continue to further expand in 2018. Miltec UV welcomes manufacturers for testing in their advanced R&D lab.
