Daramic, LLC, manufacturer and supplier of battery separators and subsidiary of the global Japanese Chemical company Ashai Kasei, announced that Ashai Kasei Honorary Fellow Dr. Akira Yoshino will be honored with the 2018 Japan prize for his development of the lithium-ion battery (LIB) and further connected technologies.
The Japan prize is an international award in the field of science and technology, which is presented to people, who achieved major scientific inventions or findings and therefore serve to promote peace and prosperity for all mankind.
Dr. Akira Yoshino invented the modern lithium-ion battery with a new combination of carbon for the negative and lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) for the positive electrode. He also contributed to further fundamental technologies concerning LIBs, such as aluminum as the positive current collector material and fabricateing the first LIB cell.
Without LIB, revolutions starting in the 90s – such as the digitalization process and the IT and mobile revolution – wouldn’t have been possible. His technologies still affect the continuous growth and importance of LIB technology in the present, as these batteries are able to stabilize the supply of power from natural energy sources and therefore counter the global warming process.
