Stocking Pelham in Bishop’s Stortford, England, is a flagship project that is able to produce more than 60MVA of power.
It is the first project for UK large-scale battery storage re-financing.
BSR EPC was contracted by SMA Sunbelt Energy GmbH (SMA), a fully owned subsidiary of SMA Solar Technology AG specialized in large scale battery storage projects, and has been on board since the refinancing of the plant, which was formerly designed and operated by Statera Energy, a developer of flexible power generation and storage capacity. The storage system was completed in December 2017.
The site, which consists of seven e-houses, 27 inverters, 12 km of cable, 150,000 lithium-ion battery cells and uses SMA´s owb e-house deisgn, reduces space requirements by up to 50% compared to constructions with ship containers.
The plant covers a total area of 4,500 m² and is networked with a 132 kV grid connection to a nearby 400 kV substation.
Tim Humpage, BSR’s Head of EPC said: “We are delighted to have worked closely with SMA to deliver this landmark project. Renewables are meeting more and more of our energy needs, and projects like this have the power to turbo-charge this trend as batteries have the ability to balance supply and demand. Energy storage facilities such as this will play an essential part of the transition to a low carbon environment in the coming years.”
