Founded in February 1995, high-tech company BYD has grown from a start-up with only 20 people at the very beginning to a global company having 220 thousand employees today. BYD’s business covers electronics, automobiles, new energy, rail transit, energy storage and other fields, providing overall new energy solutions with zero emissions. Over the last 23 years, the company has established over 30 industrial parks across the globe and operates in over 50 countries and regions. ees International interviewed Mr. Guo Bin, Director of Energy Storage Business Development, about the company’s market assessment and expertise in electrification of the public transportation sector.
ees International: BYD is launching electric bus fleets in big cities all over the world. BYD’s latest press releases mentioned commissioning of BYD fleets in New Zealand, South Korea and Spain – With a view on all of the continents, where do you find the most promising markets for electrified public transportation?
The electrification of the automobile has been an irreversible trend of the world. A number of countries, such as Germany and India, have announced the time schedules to ban the fuel vehicle sales. Many countries and regions have an exciting demand for the New Energy Vehicles, the outlook of the NEV developing is very promising. BYD now takes an absolute lead in multiple markets all around the world. In the electrified public transportation sesctor, take the pure electric buses for example: BYD’s pure electric buses have been ranked No.1 in sales globally for four consecutive years. We have up to 80% shares in the US pure electric buses market and took over more than 50% shares in the UK market. So far, the footprint of BYD electric buses and taxis spreads over 6 continents, 50 countries and about 200 cities.
ees International: What makes the BYD batteries special? How are they produced?
On the one hand, BYD has a large “technical pool” encompassing 20,000 R&D engineers, occupying about 10% of the total employees, authorized patents exceed 1,300 every year. Technology is BYD’s DNA, by following its “Technology Based, Innovation Oriented” development concept, BYD has succeeded brilliantly in establishing a state-of-the-art technological innovation platform, on which world-leading technologies are continuously developed in various areas, that giving BYD the ability of 100% independent research and development, design and produce of batteries.
On the other hand, after more than 20 years continuous innovation and experiences, BYD has conducted an complete battery production line covering from 3C(Computer, Communication, Consumer Electronic) Batteries, Power Batteries to Energy Storage Batteries field. We produce NiMH batteries, lithium cobalt oxide batteries, lithium iron phosphate batteries, and ternary batteries. And at present, as the largest energy storage supplier, we have the world biggest power battery factory and the total fully commissioned battery capacity has reached 28GWh in 2018.
ees International: What are other important pillars of BYD, besides electrification of public transportation?
Currently, BYD has 4 core businesses, they are IT, new energy, Automotive, Rail Transit.
In the IT sector, we are one of the leading global solution providers of electronic products, the main business covers the manufacturing of metal structural parts, plastic structural parts, 3D glass, ceramics, chargers, rechargeable batteries, and other parts of electronic products, as well as the whole-machine design and assembly of electronic products. The products can be used in a wide range of industries including consumer electronics, automotive electronics, industrial electronics and Internet of Things (IoT). The main customers include Samsung, HUAWEI, vivo, OPPO, LG, Lenovo, Apple, Google, Microsoft and other world-renowned enterprises.
In the New Energy field, in additional to the PV and LED light, BYD is the pioneer in Energy Storage Solutions since 2010. We can provide customers with one-stop service solutions ranging from the design, R&D, manufacturing, supply chain management to customer services. Based on the core technology of iron battery and mature energy control system, BYD has developed a series of battery storage products including new energy power generation, power auxiliary services, special occasion power supply, micro grid as well as residential applications. For example, we conducted the world’s first energy storage power station (3MW/12MWh) for Southern Power Grid, the world’s largest user-side iron battery energy storage power station (20MW/40MWh) in Pingshan, and has delivered 132MW energy storage systems for frequency regulation in America PJM markets etc.
ees International: What is BYD’s main customer group at the moment?
Different business will aim at diffrent consumer group. Let’s take Energy Storage Solutions for example. There are three main appilication fields for energy storage ranging from Utility, Commercial & Industrial and Residential. From the Utililty scale, like peak shaving and frequency regulation, often front the meter, and normally requires larger size systems, we will put more effort on the needs of the utilities, power companies, project developers as well as EPCs. For the the C&I applications, as the name suggests, our main targeting group will turn to commerial or industrial parties (e.g. Hypermarket, Hotels, Data centers), usually behind the meter, used to reduce a commercial or industrial customer’s payment for electricity use, including energy and demand charges. As for the residential part, we are more focused on the distributors and end household consumers.
